Summary of the project:

 In late November 2012, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will meet in Doha, Qatar for the 18th Conference of Parties (COP18) to assess international progress in dealing with climate change and to establish legally binding obligations for developed countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.  
 
In anticipation of the conference and in recognition of the important role that Arab youth can play in stopping the climate crisis, IndyACT has partnered with 350.org and the DEMENA Climate Ambassadors Program to organize a 5-day Arab Region Climate Change Workshop to launch the Arab youth climate movement.

Participants should have a good understanding of climate change as a result of their commitment and passion within the field.  
 
The objectives of the workshop are as follows:

Establish the Arab Youth Climate Movement
Build the capacity for the Arab Youth to engage their communities and countries in taking action on climate (with COP18 in Doha as a starting point).
Raise the understanding of youths on the latest climate science and policy developments, as well as exciting organizing tactics such as storytelling, campaigning and action-planning.
Bring youth together for an opportunity to make new friends, organize with one another to a produce a half-year plan that they can jointly implement after the workshop.
Learn the skills to run similar workshops in their own countries.
Empower participants with the skills and resources to effectively engage in both climate negotiations as well as in building a local grassroots movement.
Link Arab Youth to the different International Climate Youth Networks

Who we are looking for:

•  Applicants must be talented individuals with a proven track record of a passion to addressing climate change in their own country and/or the MENA region
•  Applicant must be willing to actively contribute at the 5-day workshop in Cairo.
•  Applicants must be committed to spread and apply the outcomes of the Workshop in their own community (Participants will be required to commit for at least fourth months period from September to December, preferably beyond December, to raise awareness prior to COP18).

Funding:

Hotel accommodation as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided free of charge by the organizers during the Workshop.  Please note that the organizers are limited in their capacity to provide financial assistance with travel costs and visa arrangements for participants to come to Cairo, Egypt.
      
Selection:

Short-listed applicants will be selected for a Skype/Phone interview at the end of August. A total of 20 participants will be selected from across the Middle East and North Africa Region to take part in the inaugural Arab Youth Climate Movement Workshop in Cairo, Egypt.
