Colleges & Universities: #ActOnClimate and Divest From Fossil Fuels

To the Leaders of Our Institutions of Higher Education: In the wake of Trump’s reckless exit from the Paris Climate Agreement, our universities and colleges must step up by divesting from the fossil fuel industry. It is past time to take action. Our futures are on the line. History will look back on this moment and ask: Who stood for science and justice when our President would not? Who upheld our commitments to the international community? Who stayed true to our values? We need you to stand on the right side of history and uphold the Paris Agreement by divesting from fossil fuels. Already, everyone from world leaders to Mayors and Governors, to university presidents have denounced this move and committed to upholding the Paris Climate Agreement. For our colleges and universities, upholding this international agreement must include divesting from fossil fuels. Only then will we show that our institutions commitments to scientific inquiry and social responsibility are more than just slogans. If you, university leaders, are ashamed and outraged by our government’s recklessness and corruption, then it’s time for you to step up and ensure your investments are not legitimizing a rogue industry bent on wrecking the planet. The response must be immediate commitments to fossil fuel divestment. Divest now. The world is watching.
