Sunday, November 29, 1:30 PM Reno-Tahoe International Airport & then Public Sidewalks at S. McCarran Blvd. & Neil Road2001 E. Plumb LaneReno, NV 89502
This is a local event to raise public awareness and support for the crucial Paris Climate Summit (aka COP 21) to take place Nov. 30 - Dec. 11; despite the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks, the summit will go on. Global climate events in support of the summit will be happening worldwide on Thanksgiving weekend before the talks begin. The events are being led by 350.org and the Peoples Climate Movement as part of the "Road Through Paris" campaign, and are also being endorsed and promoted by the Sierra Club and its state Toiyabe Chapter which covers Nevada and part of Eastern California from Lake Tahoe south to Mammoth. This is also a good short video by 350.org about why we need to act now!
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, Nov. 28 & 29: Social Media Action:
Wherever you are during Thanksgiving weekend, please post and tweet this on Facebook and Twitter:
#ActInParis! #Reno #Tahoe wants globe to TURN ON #RENEWABLES & TURN OFF #FOSSILFUELS! @350 @SierraClub #climatemarch 350.org/paris/
SUNDAY, NOV. 29: Airport & Public Sidewalk Strolls (come to both or either one!)
These areas will be busy on Thanksgiving weekend so we will raise a lot of awareness for the Paris Climate Talks with our sunflower-covered shirts with calls for more renewable energy. We will quietly buy snacks, stroll, and window shop at the airport and also hold up provided climate signs at the public sidewalks at S. McCarran Blvd. and Neil Road near the mall. It will be on Sunday afternoon when more of us should have time to participate than on Saturday when we may still be busy with family during holiday entertaining.
OUTFIT TO WEAR: Janette will bring many copies of 3 wearable messages on 8½ x 11 paper that have a sunflower graphic on them; you can also wear an artificial or real flower(s). We will tape one message to our backs that says “Reno-Tahoe Public For Paris Climate Action!”. We will tape a second sign on our fronts that says either “Turn On Renewables (Solar, Heothermal & Eind) or “Turn Off Fossil Fuels (Like North Valmy Coal Plant!)”.
ACTION: Stroll around the 1st Floor public area of the airport and, afterward, the outdoor public sidewalks near Meadowood Mall. In the airport, we will be in groups of 3-4 window shopping and shopping without any shouting or chanting. We will instead just draw attention with our flowered shirts. We will buy beverages, snacks or postcards at a few stores! The VP of Security knows we are coming and asks us to quietly enjoy the public areas and restaurants without congesting any areas and without signs. If any of us are asked to leave for some odd reason by any security staff, we will leave peacefully.
TIME #1: From 1:30 – 3:00 pm at the Reno-Tahoe Int'l. Airport – Meet at Hyatt Place Reno-Tahoe Airport Hotel in the Free Parking Lot & Free Gravel Lot area at 1790 E. Plumb Lane, Reno, NV 89502. We will get outfits ready outside (or inside in sunroom if the weather is bad) and then take just a few cars to the parking lot at the airport at 2001 E. Plumb Lane). Then several of us will buy a beverage or snack at the Terminal Lobby before we split up into small groups and walk around quietly in the public areas on the first floors.
TIME #2: From 3:30 – 5:00 pm at the intersection of S. McCarran and Neil Road near Reno's Meadowood Mall – Park nearby at many parking lots. Janette will bring signs.
Thanks again, and I look forward to everyone participating in our Reno-Tahoe Global Climate Sunday Strolls!
