Join us to demonstrate your support for meaningful action on climate change between 9:00 and 10:00 am. The event will include a short question and answer session.
Climate change is occurring, and we are to blame. It's environmental and economic impacts are real: its now time to take action. Further delay would be hugely expensive for both. The first thing we need to do is inform the public. This will help initiate action at a local level. But more importantly, our voices will be heard by politicians, who will then be able to support the legislative changes needed - both nationally and internationally. Action has been delayed for too long by a vocal minority seduced by propoganda from the sectors that will suffer financially from the changes needed, and which have in the past successfully spread the seeds of doubt. We have already started the necessary move away from the old hydrocarbon economy, but it needs to happen faster. Join us in Alexandra to help make this happen.
Why Alexandra? Boulder, Colorado is a small city, yet is the centre for atmospheric research in USA. But who deserves that mantle in New Zealand? As the base town for NIWA's Lauder atmospheric research group, and Bodeker Scientific, Alexandra is arguably the "Boulder of New Zealand". We have more atmospheric scientists per capita than any other centre in New Zealand. Some of these scientists will be there to answer your questions.
It doesn't make sense to increase our carbon footprint by travelling to another venue, so we will meet at the monument in Alexandra to show our support for meaningful action. If the throngs are too large, we may need to reconvene at the tennis courts, across Centennial Avenue.
We need to show leadership on our commitment to action over climate change, and to demonstrate to the business community and politicians that we care.
There is a "virtual attendance" option for those who wish to register their concern, but can't attend any of the marches. If you do plan to attend in virtual capacity only, please include that in your feedback when you register, so we can't be accused of double-dipping on numbers.
