Kia Ora friends,
Join us on May 8 to stop Westpac funding an environmental catastrophe!
As part of a global week of climate action, we’re joining indigenous Australians and environmentalists to take action against Westpac, which is considering funding one of the world's largest coal mines across the ditch in Queensland, Australia.
The giant Indian corporation Adani is planning six open cut pits and five underground mines, desecrating Aboriginal land 170 times the size of Hagley Park. Dredging shipping channels and transporting the coal through the Great Barrier Reef will further decimate this fragile ecosystem. Not to mention, this mine will produce four times the yearly fossil fuel emissions of the whole of New Zealand!
When enough of us join together in protest we are truly unstoppable. Across Australasia 350.org will blockade and disrupt Westpac, the only bank still considering funding this climate catastrophe. Similar campaigns have already influenced every other major Australian bank to back down - with your support and one last giant effort we can win.
Anyone can join us. Whether linking arms with fellow climate warriors, holding banners, handing out flyers, or dressing up as a superhero (more details to come!) - you can help in a role you feel comfortable with.
The briefing and training session is Sunday May 7th, 4-6pm
At St Ninian’s Church, 9 Puriri St, Riccarton. This will cover everything you need to know for the day. Our non-violent ethos, what to bring and what we are going to do. Please come to this if at all possible.
From there we will let you know where and when to meet for the action on Monday May 8th. Please plan to be there for the day if you can.
Help us spread the word by inviting your friends to come along through the facebook event.
VIDEO: Hugely successful Breakfree action last year against ANZ - Riccarton, Christchurch
In Aotearoa we’re getting awesome at climate action! We’ve had two successful years of shutting down the NZ Petroleum Conference. Last year 350 Aotearoa blockaded six ANZ banks nationwide; in Christchurch 80 of us shut down ANZ Riccarton for a day. ANZ has now ruled out funding the Adani Mine.
We’ve also seen the groundswell of opposition against the Dakota Pipeline at Standing Rock, and the impressive movement that it sparked. Governments across the world are failing us, so it’s up to us, the people, to stop catastrophic climate change. Together, we speak out to ensure Westpac rules out funding the Carmichael coal mine.
Australians are building momentum against this climate-destroying project, and they have called on us to help. In a show of solidarity and people power, Kiwis across the country must stand up against the funding of our region's biggest climate crime. Your voice and actions make all the difference - Join us.
We'll see you there!
Ngā mihi nui,
The 350 Christchurch team
