Saturday, September 21, 10:00 AM The corner of Exchange Blvd. and W. Broad St. in front of the Gannett, Democrat and Chronicle buildingEarth Vigil -- Meditation for the Environment Organized by The Rochester Zen Center and The Lost Bird Project Please come join us for a 2-hour outdoor meditation event on Saturday morning, September 21, 10 AM to noon, to show support for a healthy environment and a healthy relationship to the earth. The location will be in downtown Rochester, on the corner of Exchange and W. Broad St., in front of the Gannett building where the Democrat and Chronicle is published. On that day, 350.org has organized a day of national demonstrations in support of environmental actions. Each community is encouraged to create its own event within a national theme of “Draw the Line”. Hundreds of events nationwide have been registered. In response, The Rochester Zen Center and The Lost Bird Project have initiated Earth Vigil, an effort to place a meditation presence in environmental demonstrations and show that silence can speak loudly, and that stillness can be deeply moving. The message we want to deliver is a plea for the media to give a higher priority to covering environmental issues, which we believe are the most critical issues of our time and are currently grossly underreported. Only 1.2 % of all the media coverage in the United States is about the environment, while sports coverage is 22.7%. The Gannett Company could help effect this change. In addition to our local Democrat and Chronicle, their holdings include USA Today, 82 other newspapers, 23 TV stations, and a web news network that reaches 52 million readers monthly. Earth Vigil is asking the media to join us in the job of raising awareness about our changing climate. The American public deserves nothing less. The more participants, the louder will be our voice and the more likely we will be heard. No prior meditation experience is needed. We will provide cushions for sitting (small beach balls!) but please bring a blanket for sitting on. As there will be no rain date, dress appropriately for the weather. We can provide help with transportation. There will be a bus at the Rochester Zen Center, 7 Arnold Park, for anyone wishing to park their car and go with our group. The bus will leave promptly at 9:15 am, and return at noon. For more information, go to 350.org, click on “Draw the Line”, enter “Rochester”, and then “Find an Event”.
