The Paris Climate Change Conference (COP21) has been extended. We are all hoping for a strong binding agreement that will put the world on a path to a sustainable future. We are hoping but not waiting. Therefore we are acting on Saturday, December 12 to demonstrate that we must move rapidly to renewable energy and keep fossil fuels in the ground. We will show the way to the future and show the many dangers of not acting now.
One danger is the millions of gallons of crude oil spilled from pipelines as in the Kalamazoo and Mayflower disasters. We now know that Illinois has become the superhighway for transporting Canadian toxic tar sands to world markets. To make matters worse, Enbridge, the Canadian pipeline company has yet another tar sands pipeline on the books for next year. If completed, the flow of toxic tar sands mix through our Boone and DeKalb Counties could reach 100,000,000 gallons per day. To illustrate the danger, we will visualize a spill into the Kishwaukee River by animating sections of a tar sands pipe. We plan to send a loud and clear message that enough is already too much.
We need to show that we are prepared to defend the climate red lines that cannot be crossed. If politicians won’t get the job done, we will. We are the ones we have been waiting for.
